The Fortress Study Group is an international society concerned with the study of all aspects of military architecture and fortifications and their armaments, especially works constructed to mount and resist artillery.











The Fortress Study Group is an international society concerned with the study of all aspects of military architecture and fortifications and their armaments, especially works constructed to mount and resist artillery.
The Fortress Study Group publishes FORT, an annual journal, which contains articles about the theory, development, practice, conservation, adaptation and reuse of fortifications and military architecture. The society also publishes Casemate, a well-established magazine which appears three times a year.
Every year an overseas Study Tour is undertaken. The venue varies but 2017 will be Malta and then 2018 in the Lowlands around Rotterdam and Lille.
The group actively co-operates with other national and international societies with similar interests in other countries throughout the world. It is a member of the International Castles Institute (IBI) and a founding member of the International Fortress Council (IFC).
A list of papers from 2012 to 2015 on fortifications and military heritage has been collected together by John Harris
Members’ Days are held annually in March or April, usually for two years in the south then one in the north. The 2016 event was held in The Friends Hall opposite Euston Railway Station in London. For 2017 the venue has not yet been decided.
The FSG library houses a large collection of fortification guides and journals. It is currently housed in Fort Nelson, Portsmouth.
