The Fortress Study Group is a Charity Registered in England, the overall objective is :
TO ADVANCE AND ENCOURAGE THE STUDY AND KNOWLEDGE OF ALL ASPECTS OF FORTIFICATIONS ESPECIALLY POST-MEDIEVAL ARTILLERY FORTIFICATION IN THE UNITED KINGDOM AND WORLDWIDE
In furtherance of this overall objective the FSG has:
a. Campaigned for the preservation, conservation, protection and recording of works of fortification and the landscape settings in which they are located, for example a pillbox in Hong Kong and Air Raid shelters in Essex.
b. Advise governments, local authorities, other organisations and individuals on the restoration and management of forts and fortifications, for example Twin 6-pdr gun held at Hurst Castle.
c. Encourage the study and distribution of knowledge concerning relevant elements such as the archaeology, design and comparative design evolution, history and historical impacts of post- Medieval artillery fortification. This is done mainly through our publications such as FORT and Casemate, which are valuable sources of information. We have also made Publication Grants to authors, such as Timothy Crick for his Ramparts of Empire.
d. Publish and administer a website on artillery fortifications, together with a number of subsidiary and contributory sites. Examples here are Defence of Gibraltar https://defenceofgibraltar.com and Fortfinder https://fsgfort.com/fortfinder/.
We have also made donations to various fortifications to help them preserve various sites, over £9000 in 2018. We need you help to continue with this work. None of the FSG Management Committee is paid any sort of salary, we are totally reliant on volunteers, so your donations will gone in full to worthy projects.
