The Star Castle was built in 1593 by Robert Adams, who was a map maker and Surveyor of Royal Works. It was built just after the Spanish Armada had been thwarted in 1588.
In 1740 the whole complex and surround Garrison Walls and batteries were refurbished and upgraded by Abraham Tovey.
The castle is a star fort with eight points. There is a keep in the centre of the structure.
The fort is in good condition and is now a hotel.
