The main fortification at St Mawes was built between 1540 and 1542, by Henry VIII and is part of the King’s Device Programme to protect the coast from the invasion.  The fortification was armed with 19 guns, mounted in the central tower and three round bastions that surrounded it.

In later years, other batteries were added to the defences, which are covered as separate entries.
