The Castle was built in about 1460 under the orders of King James II. This was possibly the first castle in Scotland to be built to withstand and mount artillery. Early loopholes for artillery can be seen in the photographs.
In 1650-1 the English forces under Oliver Cromwell attacked and damaged the castle.
During World War I the castle was used as an ammunition depot.
