Kotor has a vary varied and long history as a Naval Base. Between 1420 and 1797 it was part of Venetian Albania. It was twice besieged by the Ottomans in 1538 and 1657. and many of the city fortifications stem from this period.
However, the approaches to the inner harbour area were heavily defended by the Austro Hungarian Empire who took control of this area. Numerous fort were built from 1850 onward. The area continued to be fortified until the end of the Cold War.
