Members Day on 23rd June 2018 will be held at Friends House, 173-177 Euston Rd, Kings Cross, London NW1 2BJ between 10:00 to 16:00. That is opposite Euston Railway Station.
Attractions – One guest speaker has now been confirmed, Professor David Betz, Kings College London who will talk about contemporary fortifications. His biography can be found at https://www.kcl.ac.uk/sspp/departments/warstudies/people/professors/betz.aspx.
David Page has now arranged a second guest speaker on a very different but interesting topic. Berny Sebe, a French academic at Birmingham University. His biography can be seen at https://www.birmingham.ac.uk/staff/profiles/french/sebe-berny.aspx
Their project was ‘Empires of Emptiness’ and their exhibition explores one of the most symbolically charged expressions of imperial control in desert environments: the Russian fortifications in the Central Asian steppe and the vast network of French forts built in an attempt to control the Sahara desert. The comparison shows how these two Christian colonial powers sought to control Muslim and predominantly nomad populations.
